At the public meeting on the 3rd November many residents spoke of how the new limit is ignored, in particular by taxis.

On Thursday last week it was announced that developers Brookgate are abandoning the 650 space multi deck car park including the 3000 space cycle park next to the station. This is a major departure from the so called ‘master plan’ that was approved in 2008.

The Cambridge Leisure Park on Cherry Hinton Road (also known as the Junction) contains a multi deck car park for 636 spaces. It is opposite the rail station. Last week members of the Association Committee visited the site and spoke with staff who told us that during the day the car park usually has only about 100 vehicles and never more than 150....Full Story
Recently three vehicles in our area that have had passenger windows smashed to gain access to articles left in view inside the car. In one instance the contents of the bag left in view had no value and the thief immediately threw it away! The owner was left with a repair bill.

We all remember the severe cold and snow of last winter. Our pavements were dangerous for weeks with at least one resident falling and breaking her arm.
The Council has never cleared pavements, it used to be done by residents sweeping the snow from in front of our houses, but in recent years most of us have all stopped doing this....Full Story
Earlier in the year we informed residents of a City Council scheme for small environmental improvements. We had a number of suggestions which were discussed by the Residents Association Committee and it was agreed to submit three for consideration.

In May we reported that a huge tree behind Northrops butchers on the corner of Mill Road and Devonshire Road has been cut down. This is in the Conservation Area so in theory no trees should be cut down without permission from the Council.
In response to our complaint we were told that the tree surgeon was claiming that he had telephoned the Council and been told it was in order to cut down the tree....Full Story
Although it is private, and most people do not know it exists, there is a small secret wood in our area. Hidden away at the end of Cambridge Place and behind the former Alms Houses in St Pauls Road.
Now there is an application to build a car park on part of the land. The Residents Association has objected to the loss of this ‘green lung’ and haven for wildlife....Full Story

Many residents will remember the sad loss of the Drakes cycle store on Hills Road which had served our neighbourhood for many years. The shop has been sub divided and turned into Richer Sounds audio and the Chapter 2 café.

At the August meeting of the East Area Committee the police attended to give their quarterly report.
A major issue was the continuing drug taking and alcohol abuse in the Mill Road

When the residents parking scheme for our area was originally set up the charges were set to reflect the cost of enforcement. This method of calculation has now been abandoned and intention is now to link residents parking permits to an arbitrary amount set by the County Council cabinet and based in part on the charges for Park and Ride....Full Story
Following the arrival of the Tesco Express over the railway bridge in Romsey the Residents Association has discovered that Sainsbury are proposing a large ‘local’ store in our area.
The Association has contacted Sainsburys and we have been told that the company is in ‘advanced discussions’ with the owner of the Mickey Flynns snooker hall at 103 Mill Road regarding the purchase of the property....Full Story
There has been a planning application to change another shop in Mill Road to part use as a restaurant.
The plans for number 102 (close to the Salvation Army community center) show that most of the property will be used for a kitchen / seating with some display cases for the sale of ‘handicrafts’ around the walls....Full Story

So called ‘Article 4 Directions’ can be implemented in particular areas so that homeowners would have to apply for planning permission to make some alterations that at the moment they can do under their Permitted Development Rights, for example the replacement of windows or the removal of front boundaries....Full Story
Many residents will have seen the newspaper report regarding the Calcutta Club in Mill Road. This is the former Locomotive public house that closed after being raided by the police who found £30,000 worth of illegal drugs in the safe.
In January 2010 the refurbished and under new ownership Calcutta Club was raided by City Council Housing Dept, Fire Service and the UK border agency (UKBA) and on the 8th of February the Council issued the five prohibition orders relating to dangerous housing for staff above a commercial kitchen....Full Story
Many residents will have noticed a change in Hills Road between St Pauls Church and the top of Glisson Road..it is now much easier to walk along the pavement!

Every year the Council allocates a sum of money for environmental improvements. Last financial year this included £7,000 on hanging flower baskets in Mill Road, £17,000 on replanting the trees in Devonshire Road round the Cycle Bridge and £5, 000 repairing the vandalised gravestones in the Mill Road Cemetery....Full Story

Parking charges in our area are set for a big increase.

Residents will probably have noticed the road works at the bottom of Hills Road Bridge and the construction of a new road into the station area. This is a bus and cycle route that will link though to in front of the station.

Plans to implement a 20mph speed limit in the area have passed the final hurdle and are due to be implemented in March. The police will not however monitor and enforce the limit.

Last month we outlined how the developers for the Station area had used some fancy footwork to change the planning conditions and phasing of the massive redevelopment of the station area. In October 2008 the Council approved the plans for the Cb1 scheme round the Station and the developer Ashwell promised all sorts of free things to the Council if they were given permission. A number of residents have asked what is happening to the former Anglia Photo Works in Devonshire Road which also included Rocco's bike repair.
The building is being converted into offices for use by the Citizens Advice Bureau. Rocco meanwhile has taken his excellent repair service to the unit 3 in the Gwydir Street workshops (just close to the road closure)

In our view there is little doubt that many patrons leaving the late opening city centre pubs and clubs would have been attracted to it.
